The Spanish Criminal Court Hierarchy

• Juzgados de Instrucción — investigating judges who conduct the preliminary investigation. They can order searches, wiretaps, arrests and pre-trial detention.
• Juzgados de lo Penal — trial courts for offences carrying sentences of up to 5 years.
• Audiencia Provincial — handles serious crimes (sentences over 5 years) and hears appeals from the Juzgados de lo Penal. Each province has one, usually in the capital.
